The Hedgehopper 5 was first staged in May 1983 in the first year of the West Sussex Fun Run League and has been run every since then with the exception of 2001 when the foot and mouth epidemic meant that cancellation of the event.
The event is still held in May and this year – the 35th event – saw well almost 300 runners, mainly from clubs in the West Sussex Fun Run League, participate in the event
The Hedgehopper 5 brings the whole club together, walkers and runners to help with the organisation of the race and to stage what has always been a successful event.
In its early days the run started just north of Foredown Tower and finishing straight off the hills and through the back gate of the sports centre to the finish. The Fox Way development moved the finish to an area just above the farm, and more recently the start and finish to a point on the just above the bridge over the A27.
The run itself now goes up the Foredown Track before heading towards the South Downs Way and then almost to Devils Dyke before looping back on itself.
